Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu Appeals to China for Increased Tourist Arrivals Amidst Indian Boycott Calls

In response to Indians advocating a tourism boycott in the Maldives, President Mohamed Muizzu has appealed to China to enhance its initiatives in attracting more visitors to the island nation.

Throughout his five-day trip to China, President Muizzu, recognized for his pro-China position, referred to Beijing as the “closest” ally of the island nation. Emphasizing the strong alliance between the Maldives and China, Muizzu commended China as a crucial partner and encouraged increased investment.

In response to derogatory social media posts, the Maldives government has taken action by suspending three deputy ministers. The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) strongly criticized such comments. Despite these measures, the widespread boycott campaign has resulted in a notable increase in cancellations by Indian tourists.
