In preparation for the significant 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) issued instructions on Monday, urging political parties and candidates to avoid engaging children in any manner during the election campaign.
Emphasizing its zero-tolerance stance on the involvement of children in election-related activities, the Election Commission, in an advisory to political parties, reiterated that they should refrain from engaging children in any way. This includes actions such as “holding a child in their arms, carrying a child in a vehicle, or in a rally.”
District Election Officers and Returning Officers are entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring strict adherence to child labor laws and electoral guidelines. The poll panel stated that any violation of these provisions by the election machinery within their jurisdiction would lead to severe disciplinary action.
