On Thursday, the Union cabinet approved the extension of the ₹300 subsidy on cooking gas cylinders for beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana scheme for the next financial year (FY25).
As of March 1st, the PMUY scheme had approximately 102.7 million beneficiaries who receive the subsidy directly credited to their bank accounts.
PMUY was launched in 2016 with the aim of providing cleaner cooking fuel to economically disadvantaged households. Beneficiaries were identified through the socio-economic caste census list or from seven other designated categories, including scheduled caste households, scheduled tribe households, most backward classes, and beneficiaries of the PM Awas Yojana (Gramin) scheme.
