Sheikh Hasina, the incumbent Prime Minister and Awami League leader, secured victory in Bangladesh’s recent national elections, marking her fifth term in office. The general election, adding to Bangladesh’s history of tumultuous polls, witnessed opposition parties boycotting the voting due to concerns about the lack of assurance for ‘fair and free’ polls.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his congratulations on microblogging site X, stating, “Had a conversation with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and extended my best wishes on her historic fourth consecutive term in the Parliamentary elections. I also applaud the people of Bangladesh for the successful conduct of elections. We remain dedicated to enhancing our enduring and people-centric partnership with Bangladesh.”
Hasina secured her fifth term in the national election held on Sunday, despite the boycott by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by former PM Khaleda Zia, who is presently incarcerated.
