The onset of Monsoon 2024 in Kerala is eagerly anticipated as it promises relief from the intense heatwave conditions affecting much of India. This year, anticyclonic conditions and the El Nino effect have exacerbated heatwaves in eastern and southern regions. The arrival of the monsoon will bring much-needed respite to these areas suffering from scorching temperatures.
In 2024, intense heatwave conditions at the start of summer mark the third consecutive year attributed to climate change impacts. Heatwaves now last 10 to 20 days in some areas, compared to the usual 4 to 8 days, according to The Indian Express. Eastern India, in particular, has recorded the highest number of heatwave days in history.
