18-year-old Indian GM Gukesh Dommaraju is the world champion after the defending title holder GM Ding Liren (32) from China collapsed in game 14 of the 2024 FIDE World Championship. Gukesh won 7.5-6.5 and burst into tears after the room erupted with cheers from the spectators.
The Chennai prodigy gained the title of chess grandmaster at the age of 12.
Playing on black, Dommaraju won the game after an under-pressure Ding made a rare mistake while in a solid position, game commentators observed.
The FIDE World Chess Championship carries a $2.5m (£1.96m) prize fund.
